On October 31, 2021, this little girl walked right up to a Blackhat Humane Society volunteer near Narbona Pass in New Mexico and said hello. It’s a good thing she did. She was pregnant,
very skinny and walking with a limp. They contacted us to see if we could foster her and I drove to meet their volunteer the next day.
I noticed that she was favoring her back right leg so we took her to the vet and they discovered that the ball on the end of her right femur is missing! It was probably shattered during an injury and that leg is attached to her pelvis by muscle alone!
We also discovered that there are around around 9 puppies in there…and she only weighs 26lbs! This poor little girl is so sweet and such a trooper. We are so glad to have her here with us.

Zoe had been running loose on the reservation for who knows how long and this is how she looked when we got her. And she was a super picky eater (my husband had to cook her a pot roast!) But what blows my mind is that in spite of having a busted leg, giardia, an ear infection and being skin and bones, she had zero problems whelping or feeding her puppies. In fact, none of her ailments hindered her ability as a mom at all.

This is the x-ray of Zoe's pelvis and you can see how the ball on her femur just isn't there
